Ana Catarina Sousa is an Adjunct Professor at the Department of Chemical Engineering at the Lisbon Institute of Engineering (ISEL), where she regularly teaches General Chemistry, Laboratory Techniques, Inorganic Chemistry, and Biomaterials. She holds a degree in Industrial Chemical Engineering from the Lisbon Institute of Engineering (2000), a MSc in Sanitary Engineering (2006), and a PhD in Chemistry (2015) from the Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon. She is a researcher at the Center of Structural Chemistry, Instituto Superior Técnico. The application of Green & Sustainable Chemistry concepts is the primary focus of her research.

Current Research Focuses on the development of sustainable methodologies for chemical synthesis: (i) the application of enzymes as biocatalysts and the use of microwave technology in the synthesis of organic compounds; (ii) biocatalytic processes for the synthesis of heterocyclic compounds with therapeutic applications; (iii) use of biopolymers to produce support materials for the development of hybrid systems for controlled drug dosage.

2020: project HyBioPol, funded by IPL, which aims to develop new environmentally friendly hybrid materials from biopolymer films for antimicrobial applications.
