The Molecular Design & Innovation Laboratory (MINDlab) is dedicated to advancing research in synthetic chemistry and functional materials, with a strong focus on innovation and interdisciplinary collaboration. As a part of the Center of Structural Chemistry (CQE) at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), University of Lisbon, we explore the frontiers of molecular design to develop new compounds and materials with a diversity of applications.

MINDlab is led by Prof. Alex Kirillov and brings together a dynamic team of researchers and PhD/MSc students. Together, we combine expertise, creativity, and state-of-the-art methodologies to address fundamental challenges in chemistry and materials science.

At MINDlab, our research lies at the intersection of Molecular Design, Functional Materials, Catalysis, and C–H Functionalization, with a strong emphasis on innovation and real-world applications. Our main topics explore:

Current Research & Expertise

(i) Design of Functional Metal Complexes, Coordination Polymers, Metal-Organic Frameworks & Advanced (Bio)Materials;

(ii) Synthetic & Catalytic Processes in Aqueous Medium; Bioactive, Catalytic, Antimicrobial & Drug-Releasing Materials;

(iii) Catalytic Functionalization of Hydrocarbons & Renewable Feedstocks into Derivatives with Industrial Significance;

(iv) Design of New Methods and Materials for Environmental Remediation, including the Adsorption and/or Degradation of Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products;

(v) Science Art, Education & Science Communication.
