The Molecular Design & Innovation Laboratory (MINDlab) is dedicated to advancing research in synthetic chemistry and functional materials, with a strong focus on innovation and interdisciplinary collaboration. As a part of the Center of Structural Chemistry (CQE) at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), University of Lisbon (ULisbon), we explore the frontiers of molecular design to develop new compounds and materials with a diversity of applications.

MINDlab is led by Prof. Alex Kirillov and brings together a dynamic team of researchers and PhD/MSc students. Together, we combine expertise, creativity, and state-of-the-art methodologies to address fundamental challenges in chemistry and materials science.

At MINDlab, our research lies at the intersection of Molecular Design, Functional Materials, Catalysis, and C–H Functionalization, with a strong emphasis on innovation and real-world applications. Our main topics explore:

Current Research & Expertise

(i) Design of Functional Metal Complexes, Coordination Polymers, Metal-Organic Frameworks & Advanced (Bio)Materials;

(ii) Synthetic & Catalytic Processes in Aqueous Medium; Bioactive, Catalytic, Antimicrobial & Drug-Releasing Materials;

(iii) Catalytic Functionalization of Hydrocarbons & Renewable Feedstocks into Derivatives with Industrial Significance;

(iv) Design of New Methods and Materials for Environmental Remediation, including the Adsorption and/or Degradation of Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products;

(v) Science Art, Education & Science Communication.
